The Gospel!
April 14, 2020, 12:00 AM

Some time ago (last summer) our church participated in an event in connection with the Southern Baptist Convention which was held in Birmingham, called "CrossOver".  As part of that effort we went out into our community around Ashville and asked folks if there would be anything we could pray for them about (financial, sickness, relationships, etc) and then offered to pray with them. If you would like to submit a prayer request, you can do so here

If you believe you will go to heaven when you die, why do you believe that?

In answer to the questions above, I have noticed several points.

  • Most people believe in life after death, and more specifically, most people believe in heaven. While many also believe in hell, there are fewer who believe in hell than heaven.
  • Almost everyone I have asked if  they believe in heaven say "yes" and they also believe they are going there when they die.
  • Many people who believe they are going to heaven base it on the fact they are good people at heart. They believe they have tried to live well and that they have tried to treat people the way they want to be treated (live by the "Golden Rule").
  • Many people think going to church, being baptized, giving money to the needy, and doing good things means they are a Christian.

Here's what the Bible says:

  • Everyone is a sinner and is deserving of punishment for those sins (Romans 3:23 & 6:23)
  • God loves everyone (John 3:16) and He provided for us while we were in our sinful state (ie we don't "become good enough to be saved" Romans 5:8)
  • Anyone who wants to go to heaven must be born again (John 3:3)
  • Jesus is the only way to salvation & heaven (John 14:6)
  • Salvation comes when someone sincerely confesses Jesus as Lord and believes that He is raised from the dead (Romans 10:9)
  • We cannot earn salvation and it is only received by faith through the grace of God (Ephesinas 2:8)

Here's what the Gospel is NOT:

  • The Gospel is not simply repeating words of a prayer*
  • The Gospel is not a set of rules to follow
  • The Gospel is not joining a church
  • The Gospel is not trying to do good

The Good News is that you can become a child of God by responding to the Gosepl message by doing the following:

If you have read this and you want to be saved, I'd like to ask that you would do a couple of things.  The first is to pray a prayer* like this:

"Dear God, I admit to you now that I am a sinner and I ask that you would forgive me for my sins. I repent of my sins. I believe that Jesus is God, that He died for my sins, and that He rose from the grave. I believe in my heart that Jesus is Lord and I place my faith in Christ for my salvation.  Thank you Jesus for saving me! Help me to live for you all the days of my life - Amen!"

*Simply reading the words of this prayer will not save you, but if you pray a prayer like this one and mean it sincerely in your heart, God promises to hear that prayer and will save you based on the promises of His grace!

The second thing I will ask you to do, now that you have decided to follow Christ by placing your faith in Him, is to make that decision public. Publicly confessing Christ is an essential part of the Gospel message (Matt 10:32-33). The Bible makes it clear that we obey  God when we publicly declare our faith in Him. So if you have decided to follow Jesus I would like to ask you to email me about  your decision at Jstewart@fbcashville.org If there's a church you attend, let me encourage you to contact them as soon as possible and tell them about your decision.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am praying for God to change hearts and lives. Have a blessed day!

In Christ,

Jay
